Technical Superintendent

Job Description:

We are hiring for a Technical Superintendent position. The successful incumbent will manage the day-todaytechnical operations in accordance with company policies and procedures as well as government regulations and customer expectations. These responsibilities include personal and operational safety and environmental protection. This position requires extensive domestic and/or international travel.

Key Responsibilities:

As the frontline management representative for the vessels assigned to them, the key responsibilities of the Technical Superintendent are as follows:

Vessel Operations

  • Provides direct support to vessels
  • Maintains the safe and efficient operation of all engineering related functions
  • Conducts vessel visits and inspections, ensuring vessels are maintained and comply with all relevant standards, and attends vessel for any major breakdown.
  • Monitors vessel efficiency and environmental performance
  • Ensure that established KPIs are being maintained
  • Continuous operation of assigned vessels, eliminating downtime due to breakdown
  • Projects and any other key responsibilities as required by the Senior Superintendent, Technical Operations

Maintenance

  • Oversees maintenance and repair of vesse;s
  • Monitors Planned Maintenance System (PMS) for execution of work
  • Monitors and develops layup work specifications using ShipNet Layup Planner
  • Reviews all Ship-Out of Service (SOS) forms submitted by their assigned vessels and ensures that all SOS events are reported promptly
  • Prepares and supervises dry-docking and related surveys and inspections
  • Arranges and manages the work of shoreside contractors

Quality, Health, Safety, Environment & Regulatory

  • Liaises with external authorities including flag, class and port state regulatory bodies
  • Reviews the Shipboard Safety Management Committee meeting minutes
  • Lead or be a team member in carrying out internal audits on any Company vessel
  • Lead or be a team member in the investigation of any occurrence, accident or incident investigation

Budgetary Control

  • Prepares, monitors and controls budget for assigned vessels
  • Provides input to Fleet Plan
  • Coordinates efforts with both the Logistics and Purchasing departments to ensure the required supplies/equipment is delivered to the ship in the most efficient way possible

People Management

  • Works with the Fleet Personnel department for the purposes of scheduling Chief Engineers and engineering officers and ensures assignments meet regulatory and company standards in terms of certification and experience
  • Input into vessel crewing and training requirements
  • Completes Performance Appraisals for Master’s and Chief Engineers

Collaboration

  • Liaises with the Sales & Traffic department to identify customer service requirements
  • Collaborates with both the Logistics and Purchasing departments to ensure the required supplies/equipment is delivered to the ship in the most efficient way possible
  • Reviews the Shipboard Safety Management Committee Meeting minutes
  • Participates as a member of Marine Emergency Response and the after-hours hotline. Any other duties or requirements as directed by the Senior Superintendent, Technical Operations

Skills, Abilities and Experience:

  • Post-secondary education in Maritime Studies, with a preference in Marine Engineering
  • Class One certificate of competency preferred
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience with responsibilities consistent with this position
  • A proven track record of success in technical and managerial positions with relevant maritime organizations
  • Sound knowledge of quality and regulatory disciplines (ISM/ISO), OCIMF regulations as well as the ability to carry out investigations and analysis
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), organization, planning and prioritization skills
  • Sound judgement, ability to balance business needs with the role of the employee advocate
  • A creative, enquiring and logical mind
  • Ability to analyze and interpret technical information and drawings
  • Ability to lead and motivate groups and individuals
  • Strong project management skills
  • High degree of creativity and initiative exhibiting strong troubleshooting skills
  • Valid passport and driver’s license
  • No travel restrictions

Working Conditions

  • Operates in an open office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment
  • Requires undertaking visits to vessels on location as required
  • Requires ability to travel on occasion, some of which may be international
  • Operates as part of on-call rotation within department
  • Requires routine after hour and weekend work
  • Must have a vehicle available for use

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to climb up vertical ladders and stairways
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Regularly required to talk/hear
  • Daily use of standard office equipment, such as computers and phones
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds
