Job Description:
The Manager/Specialist, Environment is responsible for promoting and supporting the implementation and maintenance of environmental compliance and improvement programs, environmental best practices and procedures throughout the company.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Providing support and advice on company and fleet environmental policies, practices and procedures.
- Working collaboratively with others in the organization to develop, implement and monitor environmental protection and improvement projects and goals.
- Maintaining elements of the company’s Integrated Management System, including environmental aspects, ship-specific manuals and environmental policies and procedures.
- Monitoring marine environmental legislation and best practices and making recommendations for changes or improvements to company operations and procedures.
- Collecting data, preparing, maintaining and analyzing environmental inventories including greenhouse gas inventories and ship-specific energy efficiency metrics, and track performance against regulatory and company KPIs.
- Preparing regulatory submissions and maintaining environmental permits.
- Assisting in the development and delivery of environmental training and awareness materials and programs.
- Conducting environmental audits on board company vessels as needed.
- Providing input to the company’s sustainability initiatives and reports.
Qualifications:
- Post-Secondary Degree/Diploma in a related area such as Environmental Engineering or Environmental Sciences or equivalent experience gained in the marine industry with a strong understanding of operations and related environmental requirements.
- Five or more years’ experience in a related position.
- Knowledge of and experience with environmental management systems (ISM, ISO 14001) and/or knowledge of marine environmental legislation and vetting requirements (OCIMF, TMSA, RightShip).
- Previous experience with management systems or compliance auditing.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
- Effective communication skills (verbal and written).
- Excellent organization, planning and prioritization skills to effectively develop and implement change.
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision as well as able to build and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders across the organization.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy coupled with strong project management skills.
- Sound judgement, diplomacy and tact with the ability to identify and resolve problems.
- Valid passport with the ability to travel regularly without restrictions both domestically and internationally.
- Valid driver’s license.
Working Conditions
- Operates in an open office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment.
- Requires ability to travel on occasion, some of which may be international.
