Chief Mate – Tanker

Job Duties:

Reporting directly to the Master, the Chief Mate is responsible for the application of the Company’s Quality, Health, Safety, and Environmental (QHSE) policies in all aspects of deck operations and maintenance. The Chief Mate is responsible for the navigation of the vessel, overseeing loading and unloading of cargo, supervising activities of the deck crew, and other duties not carried out by the Captain.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Works on day work or a watch system as delegated by the Master.
  • Approves all cargo orders received from supply and prepares loading / discharge plans.
  • Assumes the Masters duties and responsibilities when the Master is not aboard the vessel.
  • Represents the Master when on bridge watch, in accordance with navigation and bridge organization.
  • Responsible for pre-cargo transfer operations written and verbal instruction.
  • Provides proper procedures to follow for each load / discharge detailed of cargo / ballast to:
    • Deck watch officers
    • Deck watch crewmembers
  • Enforces safety regulations, safe working practices, and approved procedures to support the Safety Management System.
  • Gives special emphasis to and be responsible for direction to deck crew via written / verbal instructions to safely perform:
    • Cargo and ballast transfer
    • Pollution control
    • Tank cleaning
    • Fire precautions
    • Static electricity hazards
    • Port turnaround time
    • Responsible for quality control of cargo
    • Assessments of deck areas and enclosed spaces for cargo vapour
  • Is responsible for instructing new staff, senior officers and crew members in:
    • Safe working principles
    • Safety awareness
    • Firefighting techniques
    • Deck department emergency procedures
    • National Harbors Board Reports
    • SI Custom Reports
    • Electronic data collection of ship’s voyage and port activities
  • Other duties as directed by Master

Requirements:

  • Chief Mate Certificate of Competency (or higher) issued by Transport Canada.
  • Transport Canada Marine Medical Certificate.
  • STCW Certificates (Basic Safety, Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, Advanced Fire Fighting).
  • Advanced training for Oil Tanker Cargo Operations.
  • Canadian Passport or Permanent Residence status.
    • US C1/D Visa if required
  • General Operator’s Certificate (GOC/GMDSS).
  • Certificate of Proficiency for Vessel Personnel with Security Responsibilities or SSO.
  • ECDIS training (TRANSAS Type-specific preferred).
  • Simulated Electronic Navigation – Management Level (SEN 2).
  • Bridge Resource Management (preferred).

Skills, Abilities, and Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years recent experience working on tanker vessels.
  • Experience with Safety Management Systems.
  • Excellent leadership skills.
  • Excel in analyzing and adjusting work procedures for maximum efficiency.
  • Knowledge of English language is required.
