OUR FLEETS
We own and operate Canadian flagged fleet of self-unloading and gearless dry-bulk carriers and product tanker vessels operating in the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence Seaway.
Algoma currently has 17 vessels on order or under construction, including 10 climate-friendly product tankers under our FureBear joint venture with our 50% partners Furetank AB of Sweden. Additionally, Algoma operates ocean self-unloading vessels internationally and holds a 50% stake in NovaAlgoma, featuring a diverse fleet serving global customers in dry-bulk, cement carrier, and short-sea segments.
Since 2010, Algoma has invested almost $600 million in fleet renewal and introduced 11 new Equinox Class vessels to the Canadian Dry-Bulk fleet with one additional vessel currently under construction. Algoma’s Equinox Class vessels reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40%, on average, versus the ship replaced and bring technological advancements in fuel efficiency, cargo capacity, and real time vessel monitoring.

Domestic Dry-Bulk
In 2010, Algoma embarked upon a major fleet renewal program, investing almost $600 million in 11 new Equinox Class vessels that operate in our Canadian dry-bulk fleet, with the newest vessel to begin operations in spring 2024. Algoma’s Equinox Class vessels have achieved a 40% improvement in carbon intensity, on average, when compared to the ships they have replaced and bring technological advancements in fuel efficiency, cargo capacity, and real time vessel monitoring. Our domestic dry-bulk fleet renewal program continues to move forward with orders placed for one additional Equinox Class new-build vessel, which will bring the total vessels within the Class to 12. The vessel is expected to join the fleet in 2024.

product tankers
The Product Tankers fleet consists of eight product tankers employed in Canadian flag service. The segment also includes the Company’s 50% interest in an international joint venture comprising ten newbuild tankers, five of which are currently under construction with five having been delivered so far, and an interest in a foreign-flagged tanker operation comprising two product tankers. Our customers include major oil refiners, leading wholesale distributors, and large consumers of petroleum products.
Product Tankers
Domestic
All of our product tankers are ice-class vessels, with reinforced hulls and icebreaking capabilities. In June 2023, Algoma placed an order for two 37,000 DWT ice-class product tanker vessels which were designed to optimize carbon requirements, possessing optionality for future methanol and shore power capabilities. Both vessels will be entered on long-term time charters to Irving Oil under Canadian flag, servicing the energy company’s refinery in Saint John, New Brunswick, with deliveries to ports in Atlantic Canada and the US East Coast.
Product Tankers
International
To find sustainable areas to grow our business and deploy capital in the highest and best uses, Algoma and Furetank AB of Sweden established a joint venture called FureBear in 2022. All 10 FureBear vessels will feature dual-fuel capability (LNG/LBG or gasoil), shore power readiness, and a battery hybrid system. According to the International Maritime Organization, these tankers also hold the world’s best Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) rating in their segment.
Ocean Self-Unloaders
The Company’s international Ocean Self-Unloaders segment consists of eight ocean-going self-unloading vessels and a 25% interest in a ninth self-unloader. The eight wholly owned self-unloaders are part of a Pool comprising the world’s largest fleet of ocean-going self-unloaders, which at the end of the period totalled 18 vessels.
The major commodities carried include crushed aggregates for construction, gypsum for wallboard manufacturing, iron ore for the steel industry, coal for power generation, and salt for winter road safety.
International Projects
Through Algoma International, based out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Algoma strives to become a Marine Carrier of Choice in select international markets. Global Short Sea Shipping
The Global Short Sea Shipping segment comprises three joint ventures with our partner Nova Marine Carriers SA of Lugano, Switzerland. This joint venture has grown rapidly since it began in early 2016 and has enabled us to increase our presence internationally.
NovaAlgoma Cement Carriers, or NACC operates specialized pneumatic cement vessels worldwide. NACC is the largest and most diverse fleet of specialized cement carriers operating globally. The vessels utilize a compressor and pump system to load and unload cement powder; this system is fully enclosed with essentially no discharge to the atmosphere and significantly reduces the carbon intensity of cement transportation versus other modes. Cement shipping operates in regionalized markets in service of large global manufacturers and in support of infrastructure investments. NACC has a newbuild contract for a 38,000 DWT methanol-ready pneumatic cement vessel. The vessel will be the world's largest pneumatic cement carrier and the first cement carrier with a methanol-ready designation and is scheduled to be delivered in early 2027.
NovaAlgoma Short Sea Carriers, or NASC comprises owned ships, chartered vessels, and vessels under third party management contracts. The size and configuration of short sea mini-bulkers allow cargo to be moved efficiently between coastal and inland ports as well as higher value product on transoceanic voyages. These mini-bulkers have capacities up to 15,000 dwt. The NASC fleet supports the agricultural, cement, construction, energy, and steel industries worldwide. Since 2020, four new build orders have been delivered, providing significant capacity and fuel efficiency advantages. Two additional 8,000 dwt newbuild mini-bulkers are expected to be delivered in 2025 and 2026.
NovaAlgoma Bulk Holdings, or NABH operates handy-size bulk carriers worldwide. The vessels are part of a venture that pursues international sales and purchase opportunities in the handy-size market.
